Jim Gaynor, Business Partner at BBSI Ontario
As business owners we all have goals: profitability, productivity, and growth. Yet with that growth often comes the added expense: employees. As owners, we will all have mental hurdles, be it if we are going from 9-10 employees or 99-100; it’s the tipping point in our ownership where we come to the realization that things are truly out of control and you cannot do it all yourself as you are accustom to doing. This is a large mindset change you must embrace the fact that you will no longer have the time to answer every call, personally meet every client, or do the work yourself—you need to rely on others—how scary is that?
So where do we go from here? As you grow you will need to empower those around you. You hired these folks for a reason, let them do their job. Assuming you have put in the time to train them and develop them, they should be ready. Will they be always perfect, or do the jobs exactly as you would have, probably not, but THAT’S OK! They will be more effective than you trying to do your job as well as the job of 10 others.
Your evolution now goes from a manager of the daily task grind to a leader of people. Leading personalities is different than managing tasks, as it takes a level of trust on your part to inspire your employees and let go. Therein lies your challenge, are you willing to let go for the betterment of your business and the goals you strive for daily?
